Goodbye MS Outlook!
A number of weeks ago, I "tweeted" an entry about trying out GMail offline and Remember the Milk as a replacement for MS Outlook for calendar, email, tasks and contacts. I had become fed up over a longer period of time with Outlook hogging my PC resources, continually crashing and generally giving me a hard time (not to mention the difficulty of syncing with MS Active Sync).
After Google announced the availability of offline versions of GMail, Google Docs and Calendar, and Remember the Milk also integrating with Google Gears to be available in offline mode, I decided it was time to take the plunge.
I set up my i-Mate PPC (running WM5) to sync via my wireless network, directly with Google Mail and Calendar. I set up Remember the Milk (RTM) to also sync with the mobile device - this worked so well that I subscribed to their software after the trial period expired. Then I also set up GMail mobile on the mobile device.
After a few days "teething" problems, I was running smoothly and my PC was very happy (me too - no crashes, no "Outlook needs to close" messages and no stalling applications due to Outlook hogging memory!). Smiles all round.
The only thing I was missing, was the notes in OneNote, although I had been having syncing difficulties for a long time with OneNote resulting in the WM version not being of much use.
Enter Evernote. Evernote is like Microsoft OneNotes on steroids. You can run it in both online and offline mode, it is really simple to "clip" pages or parts of pages from your screen to a new note, and the tagging feature really helps in searching. The only shortcoming that I experience at the moment - the mobile version only works when the mobile is online. Apart from that, it is a very useful application and will progressively replace OneNote in my system.
So, there it is - my "new" integrated management system. If anyone knows of a Notes type application that works like Evernote but with offline options for both Windows and Windows mobile, please let me know.
